A journey in every cup

The story of coffee

From the misty highlands of Ethiopia to the cafés of Cologne, Coffeist follows the bean across centuries and continents — celebrating the people, places and craft behind the world's most beloved drink.

Welcome to Coffeist

More than a drink — a culture

Coffee has shaped trade routes, sparked revolutions, fuelled artists and built communities. We gather its stories so every cup you pour carries a little more meaning.

Rooted in origin

We trace coffee back to the farms and forests where it grows, honouring the growers who nurture every cherry.

Crafted with care

From roasting curves to brew ratios, we explore the craft that transforms a humble seed into liquid character.

Shared in community

Coffee is best with company. We celebrate the rituals, cafés and conversations it brings to life.

A short history

Twelve centuries in the cup

Scroll through the milestones that carried coffee from a wild Ethiopian shrub to a global ritual enjoyed more than two billion times a day.

850 CE

The legend of Kaldi

An Ethiopian goatherd named Kaldi notices his flock dancing with energy after eating bright red cherries from a wild shrub. Curiosity turns into the first taste of coffee.

1450s

Sufi monasteries of Yemen

Coffee is roasted and brewed in Yemen, where Sufi mystics drink it to stay alert during night prayers. The port of Mocha becomes the heart of the early coffee trade.

1554

The first coffee houses

Istanbul opens its earliest coffee houses — the "schools of the wise" — where people gather to talk, play games and debate ideas over endless cups.

1650s

Coffee reaches Europe

Coffee houses sweep through Venice, Vienna, London and Paris, becoming the engines of news, commerce and Enlightenment conversation.

1720

A new world of growing

A single seedling carried to Martinique seeds plantations across the Americas, making Latin America the future powerhouse of coffee production.

1901

The espresso machine

Luigi Bezzera patents a machine that forces steam through ground coffee, giving birth to espresso and the fast, intense Italian café culture.

Today

The third wave

Coffee is treated as a craft like wine — single origins, transparent sourcing and meticulous brewing put quality and the grower's story front and centre.

Where it grows

From the Bean Belt to your cup

Coffee grows in a tropical band around the equator, where altitude, soil and climate shape its flavour. The floral teas of Ethiopia, the chocolatey depth of Brazil and the bright acidity of Colombia each tell a story of place.

We travel to the farms and cooperatives behind these flavours, sharing the work and wisdom of the people who grow our coffee.
